Champagny or Pralognan: Which Village to Choose?
Choose Champagny for gondola access to the linked La Plagne ski area and days in Champagny-le-Haut. Choose Pralognan for its own ski area and a different set of Vanoise walking starts.

Both villages are useful bases for a mountain holiday, but they lead into different days. Decide whether your priority is the linked ski network, a specific walking route or the daily convenience of a particular accommodation address.
Compare the main reasons to stay
| Priority | Champagny-en-Vanoise | Pralognan-la-Vanoise |
|---|---|---|
| Alpine skiing | Gondola access to La Plagne, with wider Paradiski options according to pass | A separate local ski area |
| Summer walks | Champagny-le-Haut, Glière and Plaisance approaches | Different Vanoise starts, including the Col de la Vanoise area |
| A mixed holiday | Village activities plus separate upper-valley visits | Village and seasonal sports or cultural activities |
| Visiting the other base | Road journey with a return plan | Road journey with a return plan |
Neither village name guarantees an easy walk, quiet room or direct piste access. Those depend on the actual route, property and travel date.
Skiing: decide how far you want to roam
Champagny suits a skier who wants to explore the La Plagne network from a village base. The gondola and return connections shape the day. Pralognan’s separate ski area is a different proposition; compare its piste map, lessons and pass products directly rather than expecting the same linked network.
Beginners should prioritise the school, teaching area and daily meeting routine over the headline size of either domain. Mixed groups should compare what non-skiers can do independently.
Walking: start with the route
For a planned refuge walk, choose the village serving its proper trailhead. Driving between valleys before a long mountain day adds complexity. The approach to Plaisance is not interchangeable with the Col de la Vanoise walk from Pralognan.
If the group wants a general introduction, either village can anchor a stay; compare a few suitable walks and their transport requirements before committing. The Champagny walking guide explains local options.
Arrival and a day visit
Check the journey to the exact address, food arrangements and the final connection from the station. A day in the other village is possible only with workable travel both ways. Our Pralognan day-trip guide helps keep that outing realistic without turning every holiday day into a transfer.

Common questions
Are Champagny and Pralognan linked by ski lifts?
No. Visiting between the villages requires a road journey. A La Plagne or Paradiski ski connection does not reach Pralognan.
Which village is better for hiking?
Choose by the walks you want to do. Champagny-le-Haut serves the Glière and Plaisance approaches; Pralognan has different starts including the well-known Col de la Vanoise area.
Can I visit the other village without a car?
Only with a confirmed complete transport plan. Check the outward and return journeys or arrange a transfer rather than assuming a frequent direct bus.
