Doron de Champagny stream flowing through Champagny-le-Haut upper valley in summer

Champagny-le-Haut: hamlets, walks and access

Champagny-le-Haut is the upper valley above Champagny’s main village, around 1,500 m. Start at Le Bois for the Gorzdérés discovery walk and Glacialis; continue to Le Laisonnay in suitable road conditions for the waterfall and mountain trailheads.

Champagny-le-Haut is best understood as a valley of small hamlets, rather than a second resort centre. Its traditional buildings, open meadows and mountain backdrop make it a worthwhile destination even without a high-altitude hike. The valley has been a classified natural site since 1992.

Le Bois or Le Laisonnay?

Base Choose it for Plan separately
Le Bois Glacialis, the Gorzdérés walk and a shorter valley visit Facility opening hours and the surface of your chosen walk
Friburge Hamlet scenery on the Gorzdérés discovery route The full return to your start
Le Laisonnay Cascade du Py and mountain trailheads Seasonal road access and the effort of any onward hike

Start with Le Laisonnay if your goal is a mountain day. Choose Le Bois if you would prefer an adaptable half-day combining a short outdoor outing with an indoor visit.

How access changes with the season

The road continues farther up the valley in summer than in winter. The park’s Refuge du Bois information places the winter road endpoint at Le Bois, with Le Laisonnay farther on in the summer road network. Snow, works or local restrictions may alter access at other times, so check your destination rather than relying on a route planner.

Arrange the return as carefully as the outward journey. A seasonal shuttle, where offered, has its own stops and calendar. If you are staying without a car, confirm the exact connection before choosing an upper-valley trail.

A first valley visit

Walk a suitable part of the Gorzdérés interpretation route between Le Bois and Friburge, allowing time to look at the landscape rather than treating it as a fitness circuit. For glacial history and an indoor break, check the opening programme at Espace Glacialis in Le Bois.

A separate trip to Cascade du Py can add a striking waterfall view at Le Laisonnay. Continuing uphill to a refuge changes the outing substantially; use the hiking comparison to assess that choice.

Staying in the upper valley

Choose an overnight here for the valley setting, then check meals, groceries, parking and transport against your dates. Road-access accommodation and an altitude refuge offer different levels of independence. Camping and caravanning in the classified valley are restricted to the authorised campsite; a quiet meadow is not an informal campsite.

The upper valley is also a winter Nordic base. Use the Nordic skiing guide, marked seasonal routes and current local advice: a summer footpath is not automatically a maintained winter walking route.

Common questions

Is Champagny-le-Haut the main ski village?

No. It is a separate upper valley. The main village has the gondola for the alpine ski area; Champagny-le-Haut is a base for valley activities and mountain walks.

Can I drive to Le Laisonnay in winter?

The Refuge du Bois listing identifies Le Bois as the winter road endpoint. Do not plan on the summer road beyond it being available; check local access before setting out.

Can I camp anywhere in the valley?

No. The official classified-valley information prohibits camping and caravanning outside the authorised campsite. Mountain bivouac has separate rules and is not permission to camp freely in the valley.
