Visiting Champagny-en-Vanoise with a dog

You can plan a Champagny holiday with a dog, but ordinary pet dogs cannot enter the Vanoise national-park core, even on a leash or carried. The Gorzdérés valley walk lists pets as accepted; Plaisance permits the approach to the refuge, with no continuation beyond it into the core.

Plan your walks before booking a stay with a dog. A pet-friendly room solves accommodation; it does not establish where the dog may walk or travel. The most useful distinction is between the village, permitted valley paths and the protected Vanoise core.

Two specific walking leads

The official Gorzdérés route from Le Bois lists animals as accepted. It is a valley discovery walk between Le Bois and Friburge, rather than a high-altitude refuge approach. Check the route and local signs for your day and keep your dog under control around other visitors.

For a mountain outing, the operator of Refuge de Plaisance allows dogs on the approach as far as the refuge. It advises a leash around its domestic animals. The protected core begins beyond the refuge, so a dog-accompanied day must turn back there. Permission to walk to the building does not confirm that pets may stay overnight inside.

Understand the core boundary

The park dog guidance describes entrance signs and blue-white-red boundary marks: blue indicates the core side, red the outside. IGN maps show the boundary with a broad continuous green band. The park allows leashed dogs on paths following the boundary, subject to the applicable local rules.

Do not generalise those examples to other hut paths. The Vanoise guide explains why being in Champagny-le-Haut does not by itself tell you whether a route enters the core. National nature reserves also have their own rules.

Assistance dogs

The park states an exception for dogs indispensable to people with disabilities, with CMI and national identification certification for trained assistance dogs, and a leash requirement. If travelling with documents issued outside France, ask the park to confirm how the requirements apply before your visit. Carry the relevant documents; do not rely on a generic pet allowance.

Stay, transport and pastoral areas

Ask your accommodation about accepted animals, size restrictions, any charge and whether the dog can be left alone. Confirm taxi, shuttle, lift and restaurant policies separately. Arrange appropriate dog care if another member of the group wants a core-park hiking day.

The park warns that visitor dogs can cause conflict with livestock guardian dogs. Check seasonal pastoral information, including the park-linked Map Patou, before a walk. Use another itinerary if the planned route is unsuitable. Pick up waste and carry bags back to a suitable bin; being outside the core still requires responsible behaviour.

Common questions

Does a leash allow my dog into the Vanoise core?

No. The park prohibits ordinary pet dogs even on a leash or carried in a bag. Assistance dogs have specific documented exceptions.

Is there a named valley walk that accepts dogs?

The official Gorzdérés route between Le Bois and Friburge lists pets as accepted. Follow local signs, keep your dog controlled and check the route’s current condition.

Can I walk to Plaisance with my dog?

The refuge operator permits the approach up to the refuge and recommends a leash around its animals. You may not continue beyond the refuge into the protected core with an ordinary pet dog.
